Centrifuge Blanketing System

The dangers of flash fires and explosions is inherent is many plant operations. Specifically, the combination of volatile solvents and dusts in process vessels, such as a high-speed Industrial Centrifuge, where highly flammable conditions can be created. Unless proper safety measures are undertaken, this situation can potentially lead to catastrophic fires and explosions.
The potential hazards involved in the use of Industrial Centrifuges for the separation of solids from flammable liquids are gaining even greater awareness and importance because of a number of serious incidents involving personal injury or regrettably death. Methods of monitoring and avoiding such hazards are important to all those involved, not just the production operator and safety manager.
Inertizing systems are not new. There have been traditionally two approaches.

Application

  • There is an extensive range of Centrifuge types and sizes. The most common type is the top or bottom discharge filtration batch centrifuge. Other types include the Continuous Decanter Centrifuge, the Disc Stack etc.

  • The types of industries using Industrial Centrifuges are similarly diverse. These include the chemical, pharmaceutical, petro-chemical and food industries. Every year a number of explosions involving Centrifuges are reported. Each time the accident enquiry pinpoints human error, equipment failure or bad engineering design as the major causes.

A typical process cycle of a batch type Centrifuge:

  • Centrifuge sweeping or purging with nitrogen gas, usually Nitrogen.

  • Feed slurry is introduced to the Centrifuge, i.e. the separation stage.

  • Again purge the centrifuge with the inert gas to remove the oxygen level.

  • Close Purging operation & start blanketing throughout spinning.

  • After final spinning, most of the liquid has been removed from the cake.

  • Final remaining solids are discharged from the basket or bowl.

  • During all these operations the Centrifuge must be inert either by purging or by blanketing with inert gas.

  • The principle behind inertizing is that if one can keep the oxygen level below the minimum oxygen level for combustion (MOC) i.e. 3 – 6% then there is zero probability for an explosion.

The System

In pharmaceutical industry three types of Inertization systems are widely used based on application / criticality / suitability and commercial aspect
Manual Centrifuge Blanketing System
Semi-Automated / Timer Based System
Fully Automated / On-Line Oxygen monitoring system

Brief on the Manual System

Manual Centrifuge Blanketing System

Manual Centrifuge Blanketing System is one of the most preferred system in pharma industry because of the following advantages :

  • User-friendly and easy to understand & operate.

  • Operator has to operate only two isolation valves.

  • Except Nitrogen no other utility required.

  • No special tools & tackles / expertise are required.

  • Minimum corrections to upgrade to Semi or Fully Automated.

D300 - Blanketing Pressure Regulator

D300-G self-actuated lever operated direct acting regulators are the best solution for low pressure applications like blanketing. These are designed to control the set outlet pressure precisely irrespective of variations in inlet pressure and flow rate for the process. Blanketing pressure regulator provides an economical solution for precise pressure control with high accuracies at low pressure requirements for process.
In blanketing pressure regulator is generally used to maintain the pre-determined set value of pressure in the vessel/tank. Movement occurs as pressure variations register below the diaphragm in regulator. The registering pressure is the outlet or pressure in tank/vessel. The loading pressure exerted by spring opposes diaphragm movement. The diaphragm movement is given to stem through the lever.
As tank/vessel pressure tend to drop due to consumption at process, the spring force pushes the diaphragm down, the stem moves up and opens the port. As tank/vessel pressure is compensated the diaphragm is pushed up stem moves down and the port opening closes affecting stoppage of flow.

The inlet pressure is directly acts below the diaphragm. The loading pressure exerted by spring opposes diaphragm movement. As inlet pressure tend to rise; it pushes the diaphragm up, opening the port and relief the pressure; as inlet pressure is compensated, the spring force pushes the diaphragm down and the port opening closes affecting stoppage of flow.

Features

  • Back Pressure Regulation / Control : These are designed to respond to the smallest rise in pressure at inlet and allow the excess pressure at outlet affecting protection of equipments like storage tanks and process vessels. These are also used as Pressure Holding Valves as they hold the pressure at upstream.

  • Self Actuated Design : This series of back pressure regulating valves are self actuated or self contained and hence, do not require any external energy like pneumatic air or electricity to operate.

  • Internal impulse Sensing : The impulse sensing is internal ie through the valve body itself avoiding the impulse tubing for sensing.

  • Accurate Pressure Control : The inlet pressure directly acts on the diaphragm to counter balance the spring force affecting efficient response capability and accuracy.

  • Easy Maintenance : The maintenance and inspection of the back pressure regulating valve internals is possible without removing body from pipe line.

  • Material selection : As a standard we provide trim material as AISI 316. Wide range of material is available to suit various services for different process fluids including corrosive fluids. NACE compliance can be provided for sour services.

Blanketing System https://regportindia.com/product_item/blanketing-system/ Fri, 26 Nov 2021 12:43:32 +0000 https://regportindia.com/?post_type=product_item&p=1762
What is Blanketing
Blanketing also called as ‘padding’ is the process of introducing and maintaining inert gas into the empty space in a storage / process vessel.
This is done by providing a way of allowing the blanketing gas into the system and another way to vent the gas for avoiding over pressurization of storage / pressure vessel.
Why Blanketing
Safety
In Petro-chemicals, Refineries, Chemical or Pharmaceutical Plants, the major concern is safety. Fuels / Solvents require Oxygen for combustion and Inert Gas Blanketing avoids the contact of satored liquid with atmospheric oxygen. The presence of layer of Inert Gas on top of liquid level avoids the entry of atmospheric air and in turn oxygen and addresses the major concern of safety.
Saving
Apart from safety, cost saving is a major advantage of blanketing in all industrial segments. Presence of positive pressure on liquid level in void vapor space, reduces the evaporation of liquid due to change in temperature and during the pump-in operation. This results in considerable cost saving in case of volatile costly Fuel Oils and other costly liquids.

Also, following advantages are noted due to effective blanketing :

  • Maintaining Quality of Stored Product

  • Prevents Oxidation

  • Safety during Transit

  • Increases life of Containers

  • Environmental Safety
